It’s tempting not to take Lonehill Estate too seriously. Over a slate of singles, the Jo’burg pop rockers have proved adept at matching purposefully crazy lyrics (“I mash my potatoes in the shape of your lips,” Nathan Ro outrageously utters on “Sugar Honey Smax”) with tunes as catchy as the winter sniffles – oftentimes risking sounding like the losers who populate the dance floor on the band’s supercharged electro hit, “Look Good”, featuring rapper JR. But combining irreverence with whip-smart playing has proved a winning formula over the years – just ask the multimillion-selling Blink-182 – and Nathan Ro and his band do it with infectious vim on Lonehill Estate, every so often even allowing something more thoughtful (“The Green Pocket”) to turn up. At times, Lonehill Estate come off a mite schizophrenic (“Roundhouse Kick to the Face” suddenly turns the neon-electro-rock group into screaming headbangers) but never stint on the fun.
