A veteran of 20-plus records, Ani DiFranco has figured out how to balance strident-free righteousness about the state of her nation with the varied facets of the human condition that we all encounter. So a deeply personal song about the surprise of how well marriage and motherhood fit this feminist (“Albacore”) sits comfortably alongside a reimagined version of Florence Reece’s 1931 protest song, “Which Side Are You On?” (first made famous by Pete Seeger) that sees DiFranco (accompanied by the 93-year-old Seeger on banjo) cataloguing the gross failures of the United States. Through it all, DiFranco gently reveals the humour that now tempers her passionately held beliefs: “If yr not getting happier as you get older/then yr fucking up,” she offers on “If Yr Not”.
