Balkan-influenced music has found a willing audience all around the world in recent years. Cape Town's best-known exponent of the genre is probably Kolo Novo Movie Band, so named because it grew out of a collective gathered to record short film soundtracks.
Founder Grada Djeri sat down with Rolling Stone before the band's Puma Real Music Wednesday set at a packed &Union in Cape Town to chat about why it works so well, the mix of traditional and original music in their set and why KNMB has only recorded one song in 12 years.
