South African cinema comedy seems to be evolving from pseudo teenage sex farces, hidden camera setups and neo-romantic musical dramas. At least, that's the promise heralded by the release of Skeem, which cooks up a fairly original premise of small-time crooks accidentally exposing a stash of cash while overnighting at a sinister hotel resort. The unwanted attention that brings from the neighbours results in an inconsistent but unexpectedly funny ensemble-type comedy.
