Natalie Chapman gave the Puma Real Music Wednesday audience something different to the usual singer/songwriter fare that she’s often associated with.
Chapman was joined by her guitarist to deliver, by her own account, a set that was more “Memphis” than “Joburg”.
Easily putting everyone at ease with her music and lighthearted chat, her ability to tell stories through her songs – in a way that gives the audience a particularly intimate experience, -was on fine display at the Bioscope.
Talking about the songwriting process, Chapman explained how a song can completely change while being written and also gave insight into how her songs mirror life’s changes.
Chapman ended the set with an exquisite country rendition of “Rolling In The Deep” which sent the crowd home in an upbeat mood. Her next album – “still untitled,” she says – will be out at the end of September.
