Sean Ou Tim aka Mr. Sakitumi is surely one of South Africa’s most prolific performers and musical raconteurs. Among his numerous involvements, Sean lists Max Normal, Lark, Mr Sakitumi and the Grrrl, Krushed & Sorted, The Mission Men, EJ von Lyrik and more. He also released his debut album Secret Asian Man.

Sean tells his own story for Rolling Stone in this edition of The Story. Each interview segment is followed by a short, intimate solo performance.

Part 1

In Part 1 Ou Tim talks about his family, his initial aspirations, his musical upbringings in Kimberley and how he became a multi-instrumentalist. He also expands on how Kimberley’s environment influenced his taste in music and how Mark Buchanan became his musical compadre. Further more there’re some cool stories of teenage pub gigs and cover songs. The segment ends off with Ou Tim performing his own remixed rendition of “In The Hall of The Mountain King”.

Part 2

In this segment we follow Ou Tim from Kimberley to Johannesburg, he explains his fascination with samplers, forming multiple bands with Mark Buchanan and the forming process of Max Normal. The segment features an incredible list of projects, side projects and bands that O Tim was part of back in the day. Each project and band features some cool anecdotes and tour stories – from playing on Steve Hofmeyr’s talk show with Battery 9 to touring with Rodriguez.

The segment ends off with Mark Buchanan doing an acoustic performance with Ou Tim on bass guitar.

Part 3

The final segment tells the story of how his solo alter ego Mr. Sakitumi was born, his current projects, his love life, writers block and how he manages to make time for all his projects. The segment ends with a song about saying goodbye performed by Mark Buchanan and Sean Ou Tim himself.
