Director Ridley Scott revealed that a Blade Runner sequel is in the works during an interview with the Daily Beast.
“Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week,” said Scott of the followup to his 1982 classic. “We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist.”
The announcement comes as the June 8th release date for Scott’s latest film, Prometheus, draws closer. Not necessarily a prequel or sequel to his 1978 film Alien, Scott said that Prometheus was inspired by Alien‘s mysterious “Space Jockey.”
He added, though, that “once you start into the evolution of the story, it moves so far away from Alien that there’s only the mere DNA of the original in Prometheus.”
While the connection between Alien and Prometheus is a bit more apparent following the release of the mysterious “Quiet Eye” promo for the latter film, fans are speculating thatPrometheus may link the universes of Blade Runner and Alien.
As The SciFi Show has pointed out, in the promo Prometheus protagonist Elizabeth Shaw (played by Noomi Rapace) addresses Peter Weyland of the Alien world directly regarding her quest to decipher the alien glyphs, as seen in the trailer. The blog also notes Prometheus screenwriter Damon Lindelof’s belief that the Alien and Blade Runner share a universe, pointing to the software Shaw uses – which is similar to the Voight-Kampff test used by Richard Deckard in Blade Runner – as evidence.
Just speculation? Of course. But sometimes that’s the most fun part.
