“It’s not my first time to play with Blk Jks – we are old friends and have played together live before,” Touré said during the recording session at Dan Roberts’ Stoep Studios.

“When you are an artist, to do something with another artist you have to really like them,” Touré explained, saying the creative relationship had been cemented when the Blk Jks and Touré appeared on stage together in 2010 at the Rio Loco Festival in Toulouse, France.

Describing the collaboration as “Mali rock meets South African rock”, Touré said the song might appear on his forthcoming record and that more production work would continue on the collaboration after he leaves South Africa for Rwanda on January 23rd.

Touré performed to a sold-out audience in Johannesburg on Friday night with his full band before heading down to Durban on Sunday.

It’s not the first time Touré has undertaken a studio collaboration with other artists.

His third studio album, The Secret, features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. In April last year, Touré released The Tel Aviv Session, a collaborative project with Israeli star Idan Raichel dubbed ‘The Touré-Raichel Collective’.
