The spiritual African soul songstress shares her thoughts on freedom, feminism, activism and artistry in Aryan Kaganof’s short film shot at the recent Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Since going solo, the former Bongo Maffin diva has delved deep into traditional Xhosa melodies and rhythms to map out a fiercely individual path from past to present and future. Her award-winning albums Zabalaza (2005), Ibokwe (2009) and Dance of the Forgotten Free (2011) showcase a bewitchingly retro-futurist blend of Afrobeaten folk, jazz, maskandi, reggae, gospel and ghetto funked kwaito-house influences which come together in an invitation for anyone, everyone to listen, laugh, cry and dance along to. She says that through her music she can “have a meaningful conversation with my generation about Blackness, Africaness, about some of the social ills that plague us.”
