The song tells the tale of a down-on-his-luck man who robs a liquor store

The animated video for Johnny Cash’s latest single, “Out Among the Stars,” which is also the title track of a recently released posthumous album, illustrates the country icon’s story of a down-on-his-luck kid who robs a Texas liquor store. He lives out the sorts of things that usually only exist in Johnny Cash songs: He scares an old man, faces off with police and disappoints an angry father. But in typical Cash form, the chorus makes it a poignant song about redemption and regret.

Out Among the Stars contains 12 previously unreleased Cash songs, including duets with June Carter Cash and Waylon Jennings, that have been sitting on a shelf (literally) for close to three decades. The Man in Black’s son, John Carter Cash, discovered the recordings while cataloging the recordings his father left behind a decade after his death. Previously, his estate released a video for the song “She Used to Love Me a Lot” put togethe by director John Hillcoat (The Proposition, Lawless).

Carter Cash recently said that he has about four or five more albums’ worth of music that he could release, including three or four more American Recordings series LPs, but that “some of it may never see the light of day.”

In 2013, Carter Cash expressed his surprise when he found the music that made it onto Out Among the Stars. “We were like, my goodness this is a beautiful record that nobody has ever heard,” he said. “Johnny Cash is in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime. He’s pitch perfect.”
